Ferragamo is best known for the brand's unique belts, but the Italian luxury brand stands for much more than just belts and other leather accessories. The history of the luxury brand Ferragamo is marked by innovation, craftsmanship and the pursuit of excellence. It begins with the life and vision of an extraordinary man, Salvatore Ferragamo, who was born in 1898 in Bonito, a small town in southern Italy. From a young age, Salvatore demonstrated an extraordinary talent for shoe craftsmanship. At the age of nine, he made his first shoes for his sisters and developed a deep passion for creating shoes. At age 14, he emigrated to Boston, USA, to work for his brother who owned a shoe factory. There he learned shoe-making techniques and expanded his knowledge of anatomy and materials. After a few years in the United States, Salvatore Ferragamo moved to Santa Barbara, California in 1914, where he opened his first shoe store. His reputation as a talented shoemaker spread quickly and he gained notoriety as the “shoemaker to the stars.” Celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Greta Garbo valued his custom-made shoes, which were both comfortable and stylish. In 1923, Ferragamo returned to Florence, Italy, and opened a shoe factory there. This was the beginning of his own company, which he officially registered as “Salvatore Ferragamo” in 1927. Ferragamo pioneered the use of unconventional materials such as cork, metal and silk for shoes. He experimented with new techniques to offer maximum comfort to his clients and developed innovative solutions such as the stiletto heel and the wedge heel.
