SIZE GUIDE

At Opticia, we bring you the perfect pair of sunglasses or glasses that not only enhance your look, but also help you see the world more clearly and comfortably. However, if your glasses are the wrong size, you might experience them sliding down your nose, pinching your skin, or clashing with your facial features.

To avoid these issues—especially when shopping online—knowing your exact glasses size is essential. Thankfully, figuring out what measurements you need is much easier than you might think. Drawing on Opticia’s quality and expertise, we’ve prepared this guide to show you how to read your current glasses measurements and select the right frame size for a perfect fit. This way, you can effortlessly find the most comfortable and stylish frames that truly suit you.

How to Read Your Frame Size

At Opticia, our priority is ensuring that every pair of glasses fits you like a glove. If you already own a comfortable pair—whether they’re from Opticia or another brand—consider yourself one step ahead. Most frames feature three numbers (separated by spaces or dashes) on the inside of the temple arm.

These numbers might look like “49-19-145,” although the actual digits will vary based on each pair’s measurements. Measured in millimeters, these figures denote your frame dimensions. Reading from left to right, they represent:

1. Lens width
If you encounter glasses listed as “52 mm” and wonder, “What does 52 mm mean for sunglasses?” it’s simply the horizontal measurement of each lens at its widest point—excluding the frame itself. Lens width typically ranges from 40 mm to 60 mm. Smaller faces usually benefit from narrower lens widths, whereas larger faces often do better with wider lenses.

2. Bridge width
This is the smallest distance between the two lenses (over the bridge of your nose), usually falling between 14 mm and 24 mm.

  • Close-set eyes or a narrow nose call for a lower bridge width number.
  • Wide-set eyes or a broader nose typically need a higher bridge width number.

Choosing the right bridge width ensures your Opticia frames fit securely on your nose without slipping.

3. Temple length
This measurement runs from the hinge to the end of the temple (the “arm” of your glasses) and generally ranges from 120 mm to 150 mm. Selecting an appropriate temple length means the arms reach comfortably behind your ears without sticking out too far.

Note
Some frames include a fourth number, which denotes the vertical height of the lenses at their widest point. While often optional, this detail can be vital if you need multifocal or progressive lenses, which require enough vertical space to accommodate different viewing zones.

How to Measure Your Glasses

At Opticia, we know how important it is to have glasses that fit you perfectly. If you already own a pair that fits well but can’t find the measurements on the temple arm—or they’ve simply worn off—don’t worry. You can easily measure the dimensions yourself using a millimeter ruler or a fabric measuring tape.

Below are the four key measurements you’ll need:

Lens width

Measure horizontally across the widest part of one lens. Be sure to measure only the clear lens area that you look through, not the frame surrounding it.

Bridge width

Measure the shortest distance between the two lenses. This is the part of the frame that sits on your nose.

Temple length

This requires two steps. First, measure from the hinge (where the temple arm attaches to the frame) to the point where it begins to curve. Then, measure from the start of the curve to the tip of the temple arm. Add these two numbers together to find the total temple length.

Lens height

Measure one lens vertically at its tallest point. If you need multifocal or progressive lenses, the lens height should generally be at least 30 mm.

Once you have these measurements, you can use them as a guide to find your perfect pair at Opticia. By ensuring each dimension aligns with your needs, you’ll enjoy glasses that look great, feel comfortable, and provide the vision clarity you deserve.

What If You Don’t Have a Pair of Well-Fitting Glasses?

At Opticia, we understand how challenging it can be to determine the right frame size if you don’t already have a well-fitting pair to reference. Fortunately, there’s a simple way to measure the distance between your temples and find a great fit:

  1. Look in a mirror
Stand in front of a mirror so you can clearly see your face.

  2. Align your ruler
Place a straight ruler horizontally across your face, just below your eyes. Make sure the ruler is lined up with your temples—the relatively flat areas on each side of your head, located between your ear and the outer corner of your eye.

  3. Measure the distance
Note the distance in inches from one temple to the other.

  4. Use the chart below
Match the distance you measured to the corresponding frame size range.

Here’s a general guideline you can follow:

Temple-to-Temple Measurement (inches)Estimated Frame Size (mm)
4.5" – 5.0" (115 – 127 mm)48 – 50
5.0" – 5.3" (127 – 135 mm)51 – 52
5.3" – 5.5" (135 – 140 mm)53 – 55
5.5" – 5.7" (140 – 145 mm)56 – 57
5.7" – 6.0" (145 – 152 mm)58 – 60
6.0" – 6.3" (152 – 160 mm)61 – 63

(Note: The measurements above are approximate. Actual fit may vary based on your face shape, frame style, and individual preferences.)

Once you have this measurement, you’ll have a solid starting point for choosing frames that not only look stylish but feel comfortable as well. And if you have any questions or need more personalized guidance, the Opticia team is here to help you find the perfect pair.

Helpful Tips for Finding the Perfect Fit

At Opticia, we want to ensure your glasses fit perfectly in every aspect—right down to the frame width. While this measurement isn’t typically printed on the temple of your glasses, it’s still useful to know. To measure your frame width, simply measure horizontally across the front of your frames, including any design elements that extend outward.

For the most comfortable and flattering fit, the frame should be slightly wider than the distance between your temples. If it’s too wide, it can make your face appear narrow, and if it’s too narrow, it can make your face appear wider. By keeping an eye on frame width, you’ll be one step closer to finding the perfect pair. And as always, if you need any help, the Opticia team is here to guide you.

At Opticia, we believe that finding frames that flatter your face shape is just as important as getting the right measurements. Different face shapes often pair well with different frame styles. For instance, if you have a round face, square or rectangular frames can be a great choice. The bold, angled lines of these shapes add definition to the softer, curved contours of a round face.

Of course, every face is unique, and what truly matters is that you feel confident in your new glasses. For more detailed tips and recommendations, feel free to check out our Ultimate Face Shape Guide, or reach out to the Opticia team for personalized advice.
